What does synovial fluid do?

Synovial fluid is a lubricating fluid in many movable joints. Its composition includes hyaluronic acid, which contributes to viscosity and lubrication. Changes in joint comfort can have many causes, so stiffness alone does not establish a lack of synovial fluid.

What can cause joint stiffness?

Osteoarthritis, inflammatory conditions, previous injury, inactivity and other health factors may contribute to stiffness or pain. Persistent symptoms deserve evaluation rather than a self-diagnosis based on supplement marketing.

Evidence-based approaches to joint care

  • Appropriate physical activity and strengthening adapted to individual ability
  • Weight management where clinically relevant
  • Professional assessment for persistent or worsening symptoms
  • Discussing proven pain-management and rehabilitation options with a clinician
  • Reviewing supplement claims critically and checking interactions

Can oral hyaluronic acid help?

Research exists, but oral hyaluronic acid formulations and study populations vary. A review identified 11 studies totaling 597 participants, which should not be interpreted as proof that any particular retail supplement restores joint fluid. Review source.
